The Khayelitsha Community
The church of St Michael's is set in the sprawling community of Khayelitsha, meaning our new home. Khayelitsha is in fact just 21 years old but it is already home to over a million people, the result of displacement and massive urban migration.
The most recent arrivals have to contend with overcrowding, shanty houses and a lack of basic facilities. With a growing population of young people and children, the schools are overcrowded and there are few, if any sports or extracurricular facilities.
Nevertheless the parents of this community are committed to giving their children the best education they can afford, even if it means paying for transport costs into Cape Town, 30 km away.
NEED FOR SCHOOL
It was against this background that St Michael's saw the need for school based on Christian principles, that would provide a quality education, close to home. In January 2003 the church started such a school in a house near the church. There were 2 teachers and a principal teaching 21 scholars in Grade 1 and 26 in Grade R (reception year)
The vision was to expand the school to the status of a primary school by adding one grade a year. Classes will stay small and pupils will have access to facilities such as computers and sports equipment.
The church has been offered a tract of land large enough to build a school on. We already build phase 1 consist of five classrooms, 6 toilets and an administration office. We also have enough space for assemble quadrangle and space for exercise.
Funding is all that is needed to take this project forward to build phase 2 which will have a computer lab.
